SENATOR Urban Freight Logistics Project

Dublin Chosen as One of Two Pilot Sites for SENATOR Urban Freight Logistics
Project.

Dublin has been chosen as one of two pilot sites for the new SENATOR Project, an EU
project that looks at enabling shared, integrated and more sustainable urban freight
logistics. The project is a collaboration between Dublin City Council and 11 partners across
the local government, academic research, technology and logistics sectors.

Senator’s target is to integrate input from local authorities, the general public, transport
operators and logistic operators & shippers into one platform. The platform will resemble a
‘control tower’ which will add structure to urban freight logistics in Dublin and hopefully in
other EU cities in the future.

The SENATOR project aims to combine existing demand and match it with the resources and
infrastructure available to build a solution that is not just efficient but sustainable too. One
of the main objectives is to provide four governance schemes for urban planning policies.
These schemes will be based around user demand planning, transport planning, freight &
logistics planning and city infrastructure focused planning. The schemes will provide a
framework for cities to follow to ensure that urban freight logistics are sustainable in the
long run.

SENATOR hopes to improve urban freight logistics on a variety of levels. From promoting
better mobility governance and more citizen centered logistic services,to decreasing noise
pollution and urban congestion related to freight logistics. An aspiration is to contribute to a
decrease of CO2 emissions by 10% from the sector.

Within Dublin specifically the goal is to improve the livability of the city by dealing with
traffic congestion due to commercial vehicles, inefficient use of loading bays and an
inefficient urban logistics system. SENATOR also hopes to raise awareness among the public
of the environmental impact of delivery logistics in the city and the advantages that
sustainable transport alternatives offer. More detail on the project and its objectives can be
found here.

Dublin was chosen alongside Zaragoza as the two pilot sites where the SENATOR project
will test, adjust and improve solutions. The pilots will aid the building of a common logistics
framework under European legislation that will be easily replicated in other locations. The
trial will take place in retail and commercial districts in Dublin city centre where space for
deliveries and commercial vehicles is limited and sat a premium.
