Climate Action Event: Balbriggan LS Lowry Street Party

.

LS Lowry was an English artist famous for paintings of life in the industrial districts of North West England. However, one of his more famous paintings depicts life on Railway Street in Balbriggan in 1970 when the Smyth & Co Hosiery Factory was a major producer in the town. The LS Lowry sketch ‘Spinning at Balbriggan’ depicts a street alive with people and it is this that we are looking to recreate on Saturday the 21st of October.

Many artists from the SCÉAL Arts Collective have recreated the Lowry sketch and a these will be exhibited on the day along with a full music lineup. The event takes place during Climate Action Week 2023 and will be a celebration of Sustainability with activities for the entire family.

Recreate Ireland, an award-winning social enterprise on a mission to inspire curiosity, creativity and care for people and our planet will be on hand to provide street games and activities to promote ‘creative reuse’ which encourages the public to reuse materials, (that would normally be sent to landfill or recycling) in all kinds of creative and inventive ways, giving these materials a new lease of life while creating fantastic playful, sustainable, and educational experiences for children, adults and communities.

Other activities on the day will also include local artists and musicians displaying their work and providing entertainment with local food vendors providing refreshments. There will also be a historical walking tour of the area to go through the rich heritage of Balbriggan and will have information stands on a number of FCC Projects in the LEA.

The event will showcase the potential of a street without cars and what can be done when we have safe space for pedestrians.
