In early 2021, we launched the Dublin Region Open Data Active Travel Challenge, seeking innovative ideas and applications that use open data to encourage and support active travel.
We were delighted to close the competition on July 14th with the Active Travel Challenge Showcase webinar. This event brought together twelve powerful data driven projects, all of which used open data to support and promote walking, cycling and being active as an alternative to motorised travel.
The event kicked off with a keynote from Ciaran Cuffe MEP on Smart and Sustainable Mobility followed by short, rapid fire presentations and demonstrations of each of the 12 competition finalists.
The solutions showcased included interactive maps which allow users to see their nearest available city bike, bike parking rack, or local things to see and do. There were online tools which facilitate citizen participation in planning for active travel environments, or show where interventions should be made to facilitate the active travel school run or to improve bikeshare services. There were APIs and route planners which show scenic, cultural, green or better lit routes for the active traveller. All showcased applications use open data from the Dublin Region and National open data portals.
