Dublin Regional Active Travel Initiatives

There is a variety of Active Travel initiatives underway at Smart Dublin, including the following two projects:

Safety Assessment of Cycling Infrastructure in Dublin

South Dublin County Council (SDCC) and Dublin City Council (DCC) are deploying revolutionary Lane Patrol equipment on specific cycling routes in both councils. The assessment involves placing a phone on a bike and cycling the route, with the Lane Patrol software automatically taking georeferenced photographs of the route. Using the CycleRAP approach, the software will determine the amount of risk for each portion of the route. Analytics are then generated to suggest changes to the route.

Sandyford Pedal Pulse project: Using smart bike lights to improve cycling infrastructure

In partnership with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Sandyford Business District, Smart Dún Laoghaire have launched the Sandyford Pulse Project. The project aims to gather information to assist in transforming cycling in Sandyford. Pedal Pulse leverages the power of smart cycling technology and data to enhance infrastructure, improve safety and encourage more people to get on their bikes.

200 local cyclists were provided free See.Sense bike lights, which are equipped with advanced sensors that collect valuable data on road conditions, travel routes and near-miss incidents. By participating in this initiative, cyclists will contribute to informing infrastructure planning, preventing accidents and promoting active travel in Sandyford.

The See.Sense bike lights offer a range of features designed to enhance the cycling experience, including automatic light adjustment based on the rider’s environment, crash detection and emergency alerts and ride data tracking through the See.Sense app. These lights are also built to withstand the elements, guaranteeing reliable performance in all weather conditions.

The project launched in mid-July 2024 and will run for one year. 13,000kms have been cycled thus far by the participants involved and as a result, 2000 kg of CO2 has already been saved. Over the past two months, over 150 incidents have already been reported by the participants through the See.Sense app, providing us with insights as to where cars tend to speed, where potholes, and obstructions are situated, and how often cyclists encounter a close pass. These insights are already proving the importance of active travel and safe cycling infrastructure.

The Sandyford Pedal Pulse project is part of a broader effort by Sandyford Business District to promote sustainable transportation and active travel in the area.
