Hale and Hearty

Hale and Hearty is an EU Funded project focused on improving the health and wellbeing of people living in Ireland. The project provides citizens with health and wellbeing related information using open data and a health and wellbeing app.

The Hale and Hearty project is supported by the EU Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). A project goal is to build a knowledge base of health and wellbeing information for the citizens of Ireland. The information gathered has multiple benefits for both Irish citizens and data managers. Citizens have access to information to help improve health and wellbeing via an easy, user-friendly dashboard and interactive map. And data managers are provided with access to statistics and sources of data for analysis, insights and action.

How was the knowledge base created?

Hale & Hearty is a collaborative project led by the Department of Expenditure & Reform’s Open Data Unit. Other project partners include Derilinx, Fingal County Council, the Dept. of Health, the CSO and the Irish Data & Cloud Cluster (ICCC).

To create the interactive map, dashboard and open data catalogue which form the Hale and Hearty knowledge base, project partners brought open data from a number of sources together. These include:

  • Local Authorities
  • Central Statistics Office (CSO)
  • Sports and recreation providers
  • Department of Health and Healthcare Providers such as the HSE.

All of the above publish their open data on the National Open Data Portal. As open data is non-personal data, it does not affect privacy rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

How can I use it?

If you are looking for access to outdoor exercise equipment, cycle lanes, or where your nearest health centre is, try using the Hale & Hearty interactive map. If you are looking for visualisations of health and wellbeing statistics, try the panel dashboard. These features are illustrated below:

If you’d prefer to just search and filter health and wellbeing related datasets, you can go straight to the catalogue listing. The intention behind the dashboard and visualisations is to make open data as accessible and easy to use as possible. This knowledge base is now live and the project partners are looking for people to try it out and provide feedback.
