Fingal County Council launches Balbriggan 3D Model

Fingal County Council has launched a ‘3D Model of Balbriggan’.

The ‘Balbriggan 3D Model’ is a visual representation of the future transformations set out in the Balbriggan 2019 – 2025 Town Rejuvenation plan.

The 3D Model launched by Fingal County Council, as part of the Smart Balbriggan district, uses aerial survey photography and ground level photo surveys in order to give an interactive experience of the future of Balbriggan. The 3D Model is a ‘Digital Twin’ of the reimagined Balbriggan. It provides local residents of Balbriggan with easy access to view the future of their town and the various transformations that are planned.

The 3D Model

In 2020, under the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform’s Public Service Innovation Fund, Fingal County Council was awarded €20,000, which supported the development of the 3D Virtual Reality model of Balbriggan. Galway based 3D modelling company, RealSim, were awarded the contract to create the model. An interactive web viewer was also developed for public viewing, showcasing the reimagined Harbour and Quay Street area.

The 3D Model is available and can be viewed here

The 3D Model is also available and can be viewed through virtual reality (VR). Post COVID, local residents of Balbriggan will be able to use this technology to gain an even better insight into the ambitious plans outlined in the Balbriggan 2019 – 2025 Town Rejuvenation plan. This will be available in the Balbriggan Hub in Georges Square where residents can use the VR headsets to visualise the future of their town.

The model has been developed with open source and open data. The data will be made available in the future on the Fingal Open Data platform.
