Smart Dublin had the pleasure of taking part in a truly memorable cultural moment last week, as Dublin officially connected live with Manila, the capital of the Philippines, through Asia’s first ever Portals installation. This milestone marks the first of many new Portal connections of 2026 and represents a significant step in linking Dublin with even more cities and communities around the world.
The damp Dublin weather did not stop the jubilant Philippine community who joined representatives from the Philippine embassy in Ireland in welcoming the city to the portal. There was a festive atmosphere on the streets of Manila as they celebrated the occasion in style. The first live interaction between the two cities highlighted just how powerful technology can be in bridging distance, bringing families and friends together while apart, and creating meaningful connections around the world.
The Manila portal will stream 24/7. connecting with Vilnius (Lithuania). Lublin (Poland), Philadelphia (USA) and Ipswich (UK), as well as upcoming sites in Brazil and beyond. For Dublin City Council, being part of this launch reflects our continued commitment to exploring innovative ways technology can create new opportunities for regeneration.
