OTie is ready to decode the mysteries of IoT and make it all click – no jargon, just straight-up smart solutions!
During Science Week Fingal’s Smart Balbriggan district launched a unique comic strip titled ‘IoT with OTie’. Local Artist Matthew Kelly was commissioned to create the OTie series to help showcase and demystify the Internet of Things (IoT). As part of the ‘How It’s Made’ initiative for Science Week this eye-catching artwork creatively showcases the evolution and future of the Internet of Things.
Matthew is a member of the SCÉAL Arts Collective, a partner on the How It’s Made event for Science Week in 2024 where the comic strip debuted! Mathew joined a brainstorming session for the event planning, aimed at exploring new ways of talking about science. The original concept was to design an engaging infographic for the general public that would include the technical aspects of the Internet of Things (IOT) but also the ways technology is used currently and the future impacts of the science.
The group was given a starting point: ‘What is IOT?’ and how could the topic be made interesting to a wide audience? During the brainstorming, Matthew decided to create an animated character and OTie was born!
Otie acts as a guide to all things Internet of Things (IoT) and aims to teach everyone about technology and how it works in a fun, appealing way.
A researcher with Smart Balbriggan then provided the following five key topics:
- The history of IOT
- How IOT Works
- IOT Use Cases in Cities and Business
- Positives and Negatives of IOT
- The Future of IOT
The Artist Mathew Kelly then transformed the research information into an engaging comic book story with the OTie character as the guide. Each topic was displayed on a large poster board and presented during tours for Science Week, at the launch in the Our Balbriggan Hub, in the centre of the town, in The Lark Theatre full tour and alongside many other amazing art installations. Watch out for the poster boards of the comic strip coming to an event near you!
