Expl[ai]n AI Awareness Workshop

Expl[ai]n is an introductory and informational session about all things artificial intelligence for public sector staff. The workshop is delivered by the Smart Docklands District and DCC Smart Cities Unit and co-facilitated by Claudia Bailey and Khizer Ahmed Biyabani. The goal of the workshop is to introduce staff from various local authority departments to the most up-to-date information explaining how AI works. This session aims to help attendees understand the latest developments in AI and how these technologies can be useful and challenging in the public sector. The workshop discusses the potential of Generative AI and the challenges associated with it. It also addresses the current regulations such as the EU AI Act and the new emerging regulations at the national and local policies.

The workshop is a mix of informational presentations and breakout activities to illustrate the risk levels of using AI, and identifying challenges and opportunities in the workplace. Upon completion of the workshop, attendees should have a better understanding of how Generative AI could potentially help DCC staff make their work more efficient and improve decision-making, leading to better public services.

The LA workshop with South Dublin
Expl[ai]n was delivered to the Community Development team in South Dublin County Council. The team was well engaged with the content, and opened new discussions about how AI and Generative AI could be used to better services for citizens. The feedback included appreciation for information on the new and emerging regulation surrounding AI, such as the EU AI Act.

Community Development Officer in South Dublin, Laurence Boran commented “We found the AI workshop to be extremely beneficial in simply providing awareness around what AI is and the uses of it. It also gives us an understanding of the scope of what AI could do in a local authority, once the proper precautions are in place. The Community Development Staff in South Dublin County Council have broadened their knowledge of AI and are more aware of good practice on its usage.”
