Were you one of the 17,222 people on 8th October 2015 who took to the streets on a Coca-Cola Zero Dublin Bike? That was the busiest day ever for the world’s most successful municipal bike schemes.

Coca-Cola Zero Dublin bikes is one of the most successful bike rental schemes in the world, with more than 58,000 subscribers and 13.7m journeys since its launch. On its busiest day on 8 October 2015, 17,222 journeys were made in one day.

The scheme is a partnership between Dublin City Council and Coca-Cola Zero and currently has 1,500 bikes available at 101 stations around the city. The scheme has been a huge success since its launch and this is partly down to the careful selection of the station locations, the high level of maintenance of the bikes, as well as the low annual fee.

To use Coca-Cola Zero Dublin Bikes, you must sign up as a member.

  • Annual subscribers pay just €20 a year
  • Visitors buy a 3 day ticket

Whichever option you choose, you can take a bike from one cycle stand, make your journey across town, and drop the bike off at your destination. The first half hour is free, which is a great incentive to pedal hard, and burn off some extra calories while you’re at it!

After half an hour, some fees kick in, but they are little ones – honest!

  • 50c for an hour
  • €1.50 for two hours
  • €3.50 for three hours
  • €6.50 for four hours
  • After that, every extra half hour is €2

We believe that collaboration is the best approach to find innovative solutions to Dublin’s challenges. If you are working on a smart city solution and would like to test it in Dublin, our door is always open.

Our Engagement Process

We would love to hear your smart city ideas.

Since our launch, we have received numerous contacts from start-ups and companies that would like to work with us. To help facilitate this we have developed a simple engagement process to help evaluate proposals and give everyone the same opportunity to engage with us.


To start with, we would like you to email us some information we can use to evaluate if your product of service is something that can be of interest for our partners. Please, don’t email a sales pitch or try to set up a meeting to do one. They simply are not useful to us.

Here is what we need:

  • Name of company and contact details
  • What specific area are you interested in collaborating on and why?
  • What will the benefits be to the Smart Dublin partner local authorities? e.g. will your product solve a problem, increase efficiency,  enhance a current service?
  • What will be expected of the local authorities in terms of engagement and resources?
  • What you would be contributing?
  • The nature of the engagement and how it would work in practice. e.g. a description/timeline  of you product trial

If you have examples from previous trials or implementations, please include them.

Please take some time to go through our website and understand Smart Dublin. It seems very intuitive but we have sales received pitches from companies just taking a chance and not knowing anything about us or what we are trying to do.

If you are not interested in collaboration – e.g. trialling, piloting, research and development, addressing local authority challenges – but rather you are selling a service/solution let us know please. If there is a challenge or tender for the service/solution you are offering then we will contact you with details.

After we receive your information the Smart Dublin team will assess your proposal and call a meeting with you if needed. If the proposal is successful we will present it to the Smart Dublin Steering Group, which meets once a month, for consideration.

If the proposal is of interest it will then be passed to relevant departments within the local authorities for assessment and to find champion to manage the project. We will aim to get a decision from departments within four weeks.

If the relevant departments are interested in developing a collaboration,  depending on the work and resourcing involved, the proposal may be passed on to the legal and other relevant departments.

Once everything is agreed, then it will progress to a recommendation for collaboration, which will be  sent to the local authority CEOs for final sign-off.

All proposals will be logged and their progress tracked by the Smart Dublin team and published in the Smart Dublin website.

Once a quarter we will host a Meet Smart Dublin event, a session where prospective collaborators can meet staff to share information, ask questions, pitch ideas, etc.  These will be advertised through the website and mailing list.
